Floyd R. Whitmore Public Domain Photo Archive

Welcome! This archive contains digitized photos by Floyd R. Whitmore (1903-1988), all of which have been donated to the public domain. The digital archive is still growing as the scanning process continues. As of mid-May 2022, there were over 5,000 photos in the archive.

The source photos (primarily slides) were stored in a variety of re-used cardboard boxes containing many individual packages of slides and prints. These boxes were kept for decades in a hot and dusty location, so some degradation of the images is expected and dust removal is a constant task in the scanning process. The albums on this site are structured to match the physical storage, since too little information is available yet to organize them by subject or date. When possible, the actual storage boxes will be shown, as will the interior packages with any potentially-identifying markings. Comments on the photos of the individual containers will refer to all photos in that container.

Your help in identifying locations, people, and other subjects is welcome! Please refer to the page discussing user accounts.

This digital archive is currently a personal project being run by an underemployed veteran on his own time. If you know of a person or organization that would consider financially supporting this endeavor, please contact the site owner. If you would like to make a purchase or donation that would help keep this resource available, and possibly upgrade it to better hosting, please see the Shop page. Scans on this site were made using an Epson Perfection V600 Photo flatbed scanner. If you buy one via that link, it will help support the archive—see affiliate note below.

This site is still very much under construction! Intended additions include more information about the photographer (Floyd R. Whitmore), more details about the project of building this archive, etc. All of the photos on this site are in the public domain unless otherwise indicated. Scans of photos and slides by Floyd R. Whitmore were donated to the public domain by his sole living heir, Donald C. Whitmore. Photos of containers that held the slides and prints (i.e., those tagged with "by-archivist") are by the photographer's grandson, Stuart J. Whitmore, and are granted to the public domain for the sake of simplicity!
